Belly of the World is a powerful documentary project that confronts the urgent battle for Black reproductive justice in America, foregrounding stories that illuminate resilience, community, and radical care within systems that have long marginalized Black lives. Through four intimately told vignettes, this film captures the complex realities and strength of Black birth workers, activists, and parents in the face of intersecting injustices. We journey with a Black trans man in Baltimore as he embarks on fatherhood, challenging societal norms and claiming space for his family; a midwife in Mississippi devoted to providing dignified, holistic care to Black and poor communities amidst healthcare inequity; an organization in California pioneering a guaranteed income supplement for Black birthing people to fight economic and health disparities; and a courageous midwife in Tennessee fighting to open an abortion clinic after the fall of Roe v. Wade.
Belly of the World confronts the systemic barriers to reproductive freedom and autonomy, centering the voices of those who live at the intersections of race, gender, and reproductive rights. This film speaks directly to Black audiences and allies in the struggle, calling for solidarity, change, and the collective pursuit of justice in the fight for Black reproductive agency and rights.
