April September is a multimedia storyteller living in West Oakland, CA.
She is the co-director of the feature-length documentary "Cincinnati Goddam." This film documents grassroots social justice movements and protests in response to the deaths of 15 African American men at the hands of Cincinnati police between 1995 and 2001. "Cincinnati Goddam" has gained recognition at film festivals and universities across the country.
Currently, April is engaged in a new documentary project that delves into the history of structural and systemic racism within the maternal healthcare system and social services in the U.S and the radical and transformative work of individuals in the reproductive justice movement.
April’s art has been exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Museum of African Diaspora, and the African American Museum in Philadelphia. She has received recognition for her visual art, including the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award, the Wexner Center for the Arts New Media Artist Award, and the John C. Collier Documentary Photography Award. She has been granted artist residencies at the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Headlands Center for the Arts. April holds a BFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and Master of Journalism from University of California Berkeley.
